The pursuit of happiness and why some of us never find it

Happiness is a strange beast. It's something that we seek, yet often don't find. And when we do find it, it's fleeting. A moment. A feeling. A state of mind. Happiness is elusive.

But the sooner we accept that, the better off we'll be. It's the realization that happiness is as fleeting as the moments that make up our lives.

A lot of us want to achieve happiness, but it's important not to get too caught up in chasing it. Instead, consider what happiness means to you and what you have control over. Happiness is broad. It's being content, even when you're experiencing hard times. It's about having positive experiences. We don't always know what will bring us happiness. Sometimes, we don't even know if we're happy. But there's a way to find happiness. It's to "be" happy.

It's not a secret that the pursuit of happiness is a universal desire. And, according to research, it's a desire that, if satisfied, can dramatically improve the quality of your life.

Sometimes, chasing happiness may lead us into a dark path that usually goes a little something like this:

  1. You have a job you don’t like, and you think that makes you happy.
  2. You take a day off.
  3. You take leave.
  4. You take an early retirement.
  5. You take a sabbatical.

Chasing happiness is like obsessing over money, it's a never ending chase because...

The truth is that happiness is NOT something that you can buy.

When I was a kid, I wanted the latest video game system. Once my parents got it for me, I eventually became bored of it and moved on to the next thing. It turns out, I was looking for happiness in the wrong places.

  1. It is something you must earn.
  2. You earn it by living a meaningful life.
  3. You earn it by being totally, unconditionally yourself.
  4. You earn it by loving what you do, by loving who you’re with, by loving where you live.
  5. You earn it by acting with integrity.
  6. You earn it by recognizing your limitations.
  7. You earn it by accepting a little help.
  8. You earn it by giving back.
  9. You earn it by doing your best.
  10. You earn it by accepting the way things really are.
  11. You earn it by forgiving yourself when you fall short.
  12. You earn it by doing what it takes to make every day count.
  13. You earn it by seeing life as an adventure.
  14. You earn it by doing the best you can, and letting go of the rest.
  15. You earn it by inspiring others with your example.
  16. You earn it by truly giving.
  17. You earn it by growing through experience.
  18. You earn it by learning from your past, but not becoming bogged down by it.
  19. You earn it by embracing the present moment, because that’s all you have.
  20. You earn it by loving your life, and the life you live.
  21. You earn it by living your life on your terms.
  22. You earn it by loving yourself, and by loving others.
  23. You earn it by doing the best you can.

So where and how can I start?

If I had to sum it up into 3 simple things...

  1. Buy less stuff.
  2. Spend less time working.
  3. Spend time with friends and family.
